Simeng Ren comes from Qiqihar, a city in Heilongjiang Province, the northernmost and easternmost province of China. She developed a strong interest in life sciences when she was in middle school. Simeng completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology through a joint program between Northeast Forestry University and the University of Auckland. Experiencing two very different educational systems helped her adapt quickly to different cultural environments and made her realize the importance of broadening her perspective. After that, she chose to continue her academic journey in Germany and is currently planning her Master’s degree in Biology at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She is now carrying out her master’s thesis in the Hilbert Lab, working with Yuzhi Bao. Outside of academia, Simeng has a wide range of interests. She enjoys music and plays several instruments, like keyboard and guitar, and has her own band. She also enjoys visual arts, with experience in traditional Chinese painting, tattoo art, and digital illustration. She is a big fan of anime, enjoys cosplay and attending comic con.
